For dealing safely with regular garage door springs, there are two key rules: 1: Don't mess with them unless the door is all the way up! When the door is up, the springs have very little tension. 2: Secure the door in the up position, with C-clamps, etc. Once you disconnect a spring or a cable, there is nothing to prevent the door from crashing down.
