I don't know a lot about forklifts, other than the part time job I
had when I was a kid.
However, I know they run on batteries so are likely DC motors, and
probably draw a lot of current.
It might take a fair bit of $$$ to buy or build a DC power supply
that can supply a lot of current for a decent duty cycle.
Things like welders and car-jump-starters can supply a lot of
current, but at very low duty cycles. (I think my little car starter is
70A 12V, but the duty cycle is 5 seconds on 300 seconds off)
I guess if you did a little research, they might run safely on
rectified AC.
Have you considered a 4-post hoist? The local car restoration shop
has one of their hoists that goes all the way up to the next floor,
which is cut out and they can actually drive cars off and park them
upstairs.
