I would use a metal drip edge, on top. If you use folded over shingles they'll
likely crack. Seal the nail holes with roof goo. Many nails, pounded in 
so they just start to deform the edge, are better than a few nails driven
to Austrailia. Make sure you get rustproof nails. I bought aluminum ones
but they were too soft to pierce the aluminum drip edge without deforming
it. Pre-punching a small hole is probably well worth your time. These
aluminum nails for this purpose come with a rubber gasket under the head.
I'd still coat them with roof goo.
