The only thing I've ever run into is dirty fittings. Did you buy the wire
brush cleaners and scrape the two fittings until they're shiny, and then
not touch them? Also, I found 5% Antimony solder to work best, since you
don't want any lead in your solder. Heat it up good, remove heat, apply
solder and let it get drawn in, I believe the formula is 1/2" solder for 1/2" 
dia pipe, etc. Oh yea, flux too, but you said that already. Make sure it
s pipe flux and not electronic flux, I believe there's a difference.
