We have a little Volvo 2 cylinder diesel engine on the boat, and the only
way to drain the oil on it is to pump it out the dipstick tube. It isn't a
question of being unable to reach the drain plug (although that would be a
problem), there isn't even a drain plug in the pan.
I also use a suction pump to pump the oil out of the front differential on
my S10 blazer. There's no other drain provision. It's a bit tough to deal
with 90wt gear oil, but 30 wt works fine. You do (of course) leave some
sludge behind. . .
