Actually, there is a provision. On many (most?) differentials, you are
supposed to remove the cover and let the gear oil pour out. Then
clean out the gunk, apply a new gasket, and replace the cover.
You are right. . .however this is the front dif with independent front
suspension.
The provision is to
1. remove the driveshaft
2. disconnect the two axle shafts
3. remove the steering shaft/tie rods
4. remove the axle engagement actuator cable
5. remove the differential yoke
6. Remove two mounting bolts
7. cuss and swear a lot as you try to swing the differential out of an
impossibly
small space and end up dropping it on your hand.
8. Remove the axle tube from the differential assembly
9. Split the differnential case.
10. Drain the oil and replace broken parts.
Reverse the procedure to install. . . Not that I've ever had to do this or
anything. An alternative would be to pull the axle tube and tip the truck
over. . .may try that next time!
Tim -- you are correct for the rear dif and probably most other reasonable
front axles. Most often you just pull the cover and let the oil drop. Takes
all of 15 minutes. . .
