In my case the electrician installed a 400 amp disconnect as a new service
entrance, and reconfigured the existing house panel as a sub-panel to the
400 amp box. I then wired the shop panel as another sub-panel from the 400
amp box. The 400 amp disconnect box serves as the meter base, and has two
200 amp switches allowing the power to be turned of to either of the
sub-panels.
