My neighbour is a sound abatement engineer. He tells me that each layer
of 1/2 " sheet rock abates the sound by 3db (cuts it in half). So if one
uses a couple of layers of sheetrock on both sides of the inner walls
housing the compressor and fills the stud cavity with sheetrock fragments,
one can reduce the noise level significantly.
