Also should mention that silicone is a no-no wherever you want to paint. Cleaning does not always remove and finger prints etc can cause later voids........

I think you are right that wrapping up the inside would form a water trap. I
did seal the edges with urethane sealer, 3M 5200 FC as used in boats, some
silicone (old types) are acidic. Before assembling the wood frame I sealed
it with polyurethane varnish. I also used metal threaded inserts  ("Rosans")
or "T" nuts wherever possible to strengthen the joints.
