- Count the link pins.
- 20 degrees retarded shouldn't be enough to bend a valve on an
otherwise stock engine although if that is combined with a tight exhaust
valve clearance you'd been getting mighty close.
I don't remember how many teeth there are on a cam gear off hand but
divide 360 by that number and you'll have an approximation of how far
off one tooth off would be in degrees.
