With regards to the head studs, I found that a better way to remove
the stuck ones is (are you listening Keith?) to take two of the nuts that go
on the studs, put them both on one stud, and tighten them against each other
(lower nut CCW, upper nut CW). This then fixes them on the stud, so you can
put your 11/16" wrench on the lower nut and remove the stud lik a bolt.
Of course, since there in no torque on the stud at this point, once it's
loose, you can remove it the rest of the way with a screwdriver.
Actually, I found the bolts to be all rusted, not the studs! If I
can afford it, I'm going to go with a set of head bolts from PAECO.
Also, Keith, I'm going to be fabricating an adapter to remove the
valve retainers and springs myself. It's basically just a spacer that fits
on top of the spring, then you use a normal valve spring compressor and remove
the retainers. If you'd like, I can e-mail you dimensions for this
(that it, if you're planning to do your own head work).

Good Luck
