Nah, I've heard semaphore, too. I'll just bet that "Trafficator"
started out as a brand name for a particular style of semaphore, and
turned into a catch-all phrase like Kleenex or Xerox.

(American) Boot == (British) Hoodstick cover 

apparently because most roadsters had hoods that separated from the
bows. The bows stayed attached, the hood went into the boot.
