I agree with you, doing the body work will save enormous amounts of money and a
lot of it isn't that difficult. I think the final paint is the trickiest part,
especially now with so many different paint products on the market. That's
why many shops have a "paint only" person. The last car I did body work on, I
did all the prep work in a friends body shop but had someone else spray it (it
was metallic with a clear coat) and it came out beautiful. It was the most
involved body project I did and I learned a hell of a lot doing it myself.
That's also why I said there are places out there (I know of a few in Santa
Cruz) where you prep it and they spray it. Just be aware that improper prep
work can ruin the best paint job.
