I too have looked into this loophole recently. The federal law is part of
Clinton's health care reform bill and allows insurance companies to
exclude coverage for certain recreational activities that may be deemed
hazardous. This appeared to me as a concession to the insurance companies
since the rest of the bill is intended to increase coverage for some
people.  The bottom line is I immediately checked and re-checked the fine
print of my health coverage to see if any recreational activity
exclusions were written in. I did not find any but this is not to say if
I had to make a claim that I wouldn't get any grief from them.  I think
everyone should check their health care policies and injury protection
coverage in their auto insurance if they have such to help preclude
unpleasant surprises when you need them the least.
