Tyson, I know how you feel with respect to a major
change discussion when just committing to a new class.
In '91 when I took the gamble to purchase my first S2
vs. a FF the very night I took delivery of the car the
latest copy of Sports Car was in the mailbox. Inside
I found a proposal to move the S2s to BM.

Safety legality issue comments: My Tiga's fuel cell
developed a slow leak so I decided it was time to get
it fix or replaced (I both fear and respect fire.)
The only way to get it out required drilling out about
400 solid rivets and taking the floor pan off the tub
(that started me down the never ending rebuild death
spiral.) After the cell was removed I did some
research on what could and could not be done with
respect to getting the cell repaired. The GCR points
you to FIA fuel cell specifications that, as far as I
can tell, would likely make many cars racing today
illegal. Only the original cell manufacture can
certify the cell and it must be done every five years.
I brought this up on the S2000 site and every road
racer informed me their cell had never been checked
(so I dropped it.) Most S2's cells are encased in the
tub's structure and could never be checked/verified
unless the tub was taken apart. I also discovered my
"0.050" aluminum floor pan was "0.009" under the
minimum cell barrier requirement (it is now 0.090").
My point is many older cars could be unknowingly not
up to current safely specifications. Not likely a
problem in Solo II but road racing is another issue.
I would recommend all take some time and actually read
the safety sections in the GCR and verify compliance.
The thought of some individual vintage racing with a
30+ year old original fuel cell gives me the chills.

BTW, I ran a "stock" '73 Tui BH-3 supervee in BM in
the late '80's with Ron Fish. It was fun running our
type IV 1679cc air-cooled VW against 3L F5000 spec
engines and huge tires!

Craig
