Chances are very high that the chain is worn, and stretched to the point of
affecting your timing, and your tensioner cannot help you. Something else is
that the plastic that the timing chain rides against gets old and brittle
and "delaminates" from the spring that forces it forward. You could be
running the chain against the spring alone, with a few lumps of plastic
clogging your oil pickup! It is not overly involved to take the timing cover
off, then replace the chain and spring. I suggest that you do this. The
chain kit from Victoria British is cheap enough. Lou
