Hi Vance,
I had similar thoughts about the location of the spring clip - it is
the same width as the cam. I could tell mine wouldn't press on with
the clip in place, but to gather some hard data I just took some
measurements. The mainshaft OD was 0.964" and the cam ID was 0.965".
The clip measures about 0.028". Basically the only play I have with
the cam is rotationally against the key. Perhaps there were a variety
of shafts or cams used over time, and the spring clip is only used
with some of them... It's a theory anyway!
