Possibly a stupid question but I'm not proud!

My intake valves are the poster child for running rich - they have a very
heavy carbon buildup (I am in the process of correcting the mixture).

Considering intake porting/polishing that many do I assume this can have a
significant impact on performance (please correct me if I'm wrong).

Will most of the carbon burn off after I run the engine with the proper
fuel mixture? I am considering removing the carbon with a pick and
vacuuming the debris out (while I have the manifolds off) but am concerned
some will get into the cylinder (would this hurt or would it just break
up?).

Does anyone have experience with any gas additives that could remove the
carbon or other alternatives (I would like to put off a rebuild for a few
years)?

Thanks,
Pat
