Depends how it was installed.
Originally, the lockout switches allowed the A overdrive to engage
in 2nd, 3rd and 4 gears. According to "How to restore your TR6", the
overdrive
was deemed to be a bit to fragile to allow usage in 2nd gear, when the
applied torque was higher.
The factory then dropped the 2nd gear lockout switch, so that the
A overdrive only functioned on 3rd and 4th. When they made the transition
to the J type, they left this part of the installation alone, even though
the J type is supposedly stronger than the A type (this is according to
the book, even though some people have claimed the opposite. I personally
don't know, I am just citing the book.)
So, whether or not you can engage the overdrive in 2nd depends on
whether the 2 gear switch was installed the DPO.

My question was about shifting, not about clicking. Can a '74,
fitted with an A-type overdrive, use the OD in all four gears, or
only 3rd and 4th?
