Thanks for responding again, but what I was curious about was WHY the plug
is aluminum?
I'm thinking there must have been a reason (maybe not a good one) why this
plug is the only one on the block that is aluminum?
Also, since the threads are straight, would'nt a short bolt "fully threaded"
with a copper sealing washer be a better choice? Tapered "self-sealing
threads" would be ideal, but I think you got lucky getting the straight
threads to seal.

Wayne---I thought this was covered before? The plug that can be used is
a 3/4"x16 hex head bolt. Get one about 1-1/2" long, so it has about 1/2"
of unthreaded shank under the head. Cut off the excess threads, and
leave yourself about 1/2" of threads to screw into the block. As the
unthreaded portion of the bolt contacts the block you will feel
resistance, of course. This will then "tighten" the bolt and seal this
opening. You can use teflon tape here, if you wish.
I was never successful using the aluminum "stick" replacement plugs. Too
much (oil) pressure at this spot.
