Charlie,
I would definitely attempt a rebuild before swapping it for a different
unit.  It is quite easy to change the brushes, and very inexpensive to try.

While you have it open, inspect carefully all the diode solder connections.
 If you see cracks in the solder or other evidence of ageing,  reheat any
suspect connections.  Years of temperature-cycling, and a tough vibration
environment, make the diode connections problematic.
