The reason you get apparent slop in the rack is you are not forcing the 
mounts hard enough to the sides. look in a TR manual to see how to do it 
properly. The factory proberly left it that way for the 2000 to reduce 
wheel shimmy

You dont need to fit alloy rack mounts if you fix it properly , 
especially with poly mounts. 

The other , and better trick is to use marina rack mounts (the 
steel parts) which have a dome that covers the alloy/metal on the 
triumph rack but are otherwise identical. You have to change to longer U 
bolts also.
