I'd guess that's a Timesert. Hard to tell from the photo, but the two brands I'm familiar with are Timesert and Helicoil. The Helicoils are almost like a spring coil, where the Timeserts are a solid

I'd suggest checking that you have the right needle. Also you mentioned some modification to the motor - head skimming - relatively small changes to the stock set up can require non standard needles
