Andy, do you have a feel for just  how early this was?

Not exactly. But in Piggott's _Triumph; the sporting cars_, he noted in a  
picture caption on p.64 that "As was usual on the very early TR4s, no rear 
badge 
 saying 'TR4' was fitted -- this only appeared after the first couple of 
thousand  cars had been built." Oh, and plate AT in my original (US version) 
First 
Edition  _Triumph 20 TR4 Sports Car Spare Parts Catalogue_ does not show a 
badge.
