OK and you left out that it's the back EMF from the coil, which is much
more than 12 volts, that charges the condenser and so on as you describe
in a series resonant circuit. My bad, I tried to keep it simple.
Anyway you look at it a leaky (partial short) or open condenser degrades
the spark and results in rough running. A fully shorted condenser means
there will be no spark at all since that's the same as the points not
opening.
