Crank Shaft Pulley

Hi V8 ers,

Out driving the B tonight, and sitting at idle, the fan started rubbing
on the crank shaft pulley.  It got worse and worse, and I shut off the
engine.  Got out to look, and the crank shaft pulley is sliding forward
out of the front of the engine.  Anybody ever heard of that before ? 
The bolt is still there in the middle of the pulley.  Any ideas what
caused this ?
