I have never used sealant on gaskets.  It becomes a bear to scrape off
especially when it is a water pump or thermostat housing gasket.  I always
have used grease, and when it comes time to replace the thermostat or other,
it is not a problem.  That sealant is another trick, to frustrate the home
mechanic.

Did you ever get the feeling they design things so that the alley mechanic
has a herd time fixing things.  So they will take it to a shop.  Pat
