Bob, 

Youv'e got it right. You distributor was not set in properly and is 180
degrees out. To check, Bring #1 piston up TDC Compression stroke (both
valves closed. At that point, the rotor should be just passed #1 spark wire
in the cap (roughly pointing at the #4 plug on the engine.)

           X - This is where your rotor is pointing if the dist. is 180 out



The above is how it looks when looking down from above the car. Left is the
rear of the car (or firewall) and to the right is the front of the car (or
radiator). So this view would be if you were on the passenger side of the
car looking down on the engine compartment.
