It might be noted that the idea of in-grid impound is something that has
been fairly common at MiDiv Divisionals in the last few years, but
apparently is not so common elsewhere. Doug and Grady, of course, are MiDiv,
so they are somewhat familiar with our in-grid impound.

But here's the deal. When I ran grid at the Salina Divisional, as drivers
came off course from their last runs I would go down the line again
reminding them to open hoods and trunks. This did not happen at Nationals
this year, and so some were open, some not (and frankly, given the
sitiuation, nobody really cared).

Then I would gather the drivers in a given class -- 6-8 or so, maybe a
dozen, not 30-50! -- and ask, "every happy with each other? No protests
pending? Fine, you're clear." And they'd go. Again, not something reasonably
done with Nationals-size classes. It also essentially violates the basic
30-minute impound standard, but one reason we did it was the drivers
involved did not object and also it cleared the grid for the next heat.

IOW, the reasons it worked for our Divisional do not seem to be in effect at
Nationals. Nationals are a different animal and need more structured
procedures. What we do now for impound (at past events, not this year!)
works. It ain't broke. No need to fix it.
