OK, how about this solution to settle the handicap system once and for all:
Everybody at every autocross drives exactly the same car. Not the same
make, model, year - the SAME car! That will completely eliminate equipment
related advantages from the equation. It's worked great for a friend and
me. And it would make autocrossing a lot cheaper for everyone, since you
don't even need a car anymore.
Actually, no, that won't work at all. Some competitors who drive the car
early in the day will complain that later drivers had an advantage because
the tires got to warm up and wear a little, making their runs a little
hotter. Then we'll have to come up with a handicap system based on tire
wear, temperature, barometric pressure, relative humidity...
