Hi folks

I need some help! I have a 75 TR6 that has been working great for the last
three years with minimal problems. However, I have had problems with the
engine cutting out over the past 2-3 days. A couple weeks ago, I pulled
onto the highway and for a second or so, it felt like I had lost three
cylinders, but they immediately came back, and it didn't happen again. On
Wednesday, my wife and I went for a drive and after about 90 miles on the
highway, we drove into Fredericton. Driving towards the uptown there is a
steep grade, and the car cut out again. It felt like three cylinders again,
then no cylinders! I thought it might be vapour locked, so parked it for 15
minutes. Started no problem, but when I started up the hill again it
started cutting out. I went along a cross street, occasionally hitting all
6 cylinders, but mostly on partial power. We drove into a park entrance and
I pulled off the air cleaner. Pistons in carburetor both seemed to be going
up and down OK, all wiring tight. Finally called a tow truck and had it
taken to Canadian Tire, mainly because they are open evenings.

They checked the car out a bit, found the battery was shot. It had been
working fine, never failed me, but at the garage it was dead. Bought a new
battery and drove back to our camp, about 30 miles. Next day we drove to
Kings Landing Historical Village, then back to the camp - about 10 miles
each way. Later in the day we started home, got to Woodstock about 30
miles, and decided to take a side trip over a small mountain. My wife joked
that she hoped the car wouldn't quit, and within a mile it cut out again.
We found a place to turn, drove back down the hill and drove home, another
30 miles without incident.

Any ideas on what I should check? The problem seemed to appear when going
up a steep hill. When in Fredericton, I was down to a 1/4 tank, but later
in Woodstock the tank was 3/4 full. I haven't tuned the car in the last
year, has about 3500 miles since I tuned it up last, but has been working
so well I didn't see the point! The carburetors were rebuilt 3-4 years ago
before I bought the car, but seem to work fine.

All suggestions gratefully accepted!

Thanks
Gordon in New Brunswick, Canada
