The diffs on Stag, TR and the big six Triumph saloon all had a splash of different coloured paint on them. Not in any particular place on the housing and the colours and colour combos told the production workers the model and whether manual, manual/overdrive or automatic gearbox. I?ve got the colour codes somewhere for the Big Six saloon but not TR or Stag. They all looked the same but there were some detail differences that meant they weren?t necessarily interchangeable as complete units across different models.

WIth the no. of British car specialists retiring, what is a typical cost to
have a diff rebuilt with new bearings and crown wheel and pinion?

I have  a Stag, but the diff is similar to that of a TR6.

Unless its really important to have the car 100% stock, don?t go there.  For not much more (and yes I know this is for a TR6) we put in a Nissan Q45 limited slip diff.  www.goodparts.com <http://www.goodparts.com>  has all the info and goodies.  The stag and TR6 drivetrains are pretty similar.

10 years ago?  I think it was around $700 plus here in Texas.  California will obviously be more.

I spent about a grand in getting my Nissan diff in.  It is so much quieter,
and the limited slip is a bonus if you like to go fast around corners.  It
would have been more, but I got the diff at a u pull it yard for well under
$100 from an infinity Q45.

Sujit,

Any competent driveline shop can work on these.  I have been taking LBC differentials to one of several popular off road specialists (Dan?s Driveline) here in Vegas for over 20 years.

There is nothing magic about Triumph differentials that they haven?t seen.

I live in Silicon Valley and sadly with the cost of  real estate all the
shops here are shutting shop. The Nissan option seems interesting, but some
modification will have to be done as the Stag has a different mount at the
front.  Folks in the UK do a BMW diff swap on the Stag.
I'll most likely stick with my Stag dif.
