[Mgs] Fuel pump failure

Bob,

Not fully true. When restoring the GT in the period of 1990 – 2000, I took the pump apart and polished the contact points shing bright.

I think the car made some 15,000 miles after it came onto the road again in 2000.

15,000 miles for me is not really reliable, certainly not compared with modern cars. I once drove an Audi A6 model 2000, which car never had a pump failure over 343,000 kilometers = 214,000 miles.

Cheers,

Hans

Hans,

Good on you for 50 years on the pump. Into my 1972 GT, tomorrow, goes its third, as the second failed last week, at ten years and 25,000 miles. I have never been successful with replacing diaphragm and points. Well, successful in that the pumps did not leak, but they would not pump.

Installed in my GT is an auxiliary pump, wired to an unused rocker switch on the console. When the engine falters, moving the switch brings the auxiliary pump into service and engine runs well again.

Running on the auxiliary pump, we drove in the CT Triumph Club’s British Reliability Run. 906 miles were added to my odometer. All cars travelled reliably and successfully, except for one that had a Weber carb, when its throttle return spring broke.

Dear listers,

Two days ago we went for a nice Indian Summer drive with the GT.

The GT recently had been MOT tested (the very final one, as next year the car will be 50 years old and the MOT test is compulsory anymore).

After a visit at a nice terrace at a lake with some drinks, I tried to start the GT again, but the starter cranked without success.

We quickly found, that the original SU pump failed.

As I had no spare pump with me, I had to call the road services, who made a temp fix by adding an extra pump in series.

Now my question is what is best for the final repair.

New set of points – available via Moss Motors a.o.

Convert to electronic points? – Is in backorder @ Moss now.

Replace the diaphragm as well? The diaphragm still looks fine.

Any experiences?

Thanks in advance.

Cheers,

Hans
