Not so, DOT 4 and DOT 5.1 are both compatible with DOT 3 and you can change the fluid without doing anything else, they are all glycol-based fluids.  Having said that all seals in hydraulic systems are supposed to be replaced every 3 years or 36k.

It's DOT5 that is the problem, that is silicone-based and cannot be mixed with any of the others, you have to go through a several-stage flushing process to change to that fluid from one of the others.  Going back is even worse.

Originally DOT 5 was introduced because it had a higher boiling point than DOT 3 or DOT 4.  But it cannot be used in ABS systems so DOT 5.1 was developed which equals it in performance.
