operate the lever on the right side of the overdrive and you will release the pressure in the system

Hit the OD with a hammer once and the problem went away.
Ran up the pressure again and the problem was back. This time it took a number of pretty good whacks to get it unstuck.
Pressurized it a third time and now it won't unstick after a lot of good whacks. I'm reluctant to hit it any harder.
Unless there are any other ideas, I guess the damn thing comes out and apart again.
Cheers,
Mike

  Nah.
Just tap the steel ring in the overdrive with your knock off hammer to release the springs.
Works every time. For me anyway.
The springs release the overdrive, and sometimes, they get just get stuck.
It's a mystery of the world.
But a few taps on that steel plate seems to realign the planets. And release those pesky springs!
  Allegedly.
Worked for me. 3 times in the past 35 years. Mostly when I'd driven the car hard.
But it seems to fix the issue, when you can't select reverse.
And it's so much easier on the bench, than on your back, lying under the car!
  Best
  Chris.

    Hi Mike,
I recently experienced exactly the same problem with newly rebuilt a BT7 side shift gearbox and overdrive unit when turning it backwards before adding oil.
Like you I suspected the Sprague clutch but after considerable investigation the cause turned out to be the new 2nd gear syncro ring which, when the box was turned backwards, was winding itself tightly onto the cone of 2nd gear.
This is something I've never experienced before but concluded that it was unlikely to present a problem after the box has be run with new oil.
This may not be the cause in your case but certainly it is something worth considering.

            Hello Again,

Finally got oil pressure in the rebuilt OD. With the car in 4th it shows about 500 psi on a gauge
However, I noticed when reattaching the drive shaft that with the trans in neutral the output won't rotate in the reverse direction. It rotates easily by hand in the forward direction. This is true before and after the pressure has been released. Before getting pressure in the OD it rotated by hand in both directions. I haven't tried to engage the OD. It's a hard mechanical stop. I'm afraid the one-directional clutch be engaged and I don't want to break anything.

I've been a long time gone from this fine place. Life's taken a lot of twists and turns, but it's good to be getting back to having to come here for help.

            Thanks and Cheers
