Much of it is about valve angles and combustion chamber shape, both of which can be far better optimised in a cross flow configuration.   Also you don't have your intake sitting on top of your exhaust manifold getting baked.   Lower fuel temps equal more BHP.

So, why is a cross-flow head supposed to make more power than a head with intake and exhaust on the same side?   You'd think that once the charge got sucked in, squeezed, ignited and blown back out, it wouldn't have any clear idea of which side of the head it had come in on in the first place.

 

What gives?
