Which looks easier to do? Have custom cups made, or custom springs?
Far be it for ME to suggest modern technology, but valve springs
could be made in any size, or an existing set with the right 
dimensions could probably be had. A nice set of three-piece springs
in a smaller diameter would make it possible to use smaller cups.
The key parameters are fitted length, fitted load, compressed length,
compressed load, and of course, diameter. Making a spring larger in
diameter actually makes the spring constant lower. It should be more
than possible to duplicate the original spring constant in a smaller
diameter.
