So then if I understand this correctly. A vintage racer should Leave 2
seconds between every vehicle and only pass when waived by at specific
passing zones during straights in order to avoid being suspended for multiple
races. There is a lot of talk about how bad 2 off and 4 off are and how
everyone that doesn't do it is a saint the others are satans gift to vintage
racing. There is also a lot of talk about "the person that hits me aught to
be suspended for 8 years." But I can hear the whining already when that
saint gets sent home for putting 4 off in a situation that he has no control
over. If you are in a racing situation you are generally following closely.
This is possible because you A)trust the people you are racing with and B)are
not expecting the sudden crazy maneuvre's made by people on the road (that
is: it is know or educated guess will tell what the person in front of you
will be doing). I would assume the people in that situation had raced
together quite often and knew of the others skills, and when that mistake was
made it was completely unexpected. To reprimand any of those drivers is
completely ludicrous. If people don't want race at a vintage race, whether
it be 8/10ths racing or the ocassional 10/10ths racing that occurs, or you
aren't willing to accept the unexpected things that happen, there are many
open track events that various car clubs hold. These track events allow you
to explore your cars potential without the fears of racing. All passing must
occur at a prescribed point and only when waved by, and following closely
isn't allowed.
