Regular right hand threads.  Some people think they have to put them on at
400 foot lbs, though.  Lock your flywheel, use a 3/4 inch breaker bar and a
36 mm socket that has been trimmed down on the outside so it fits all the
way in.  (I broke two 1/2 inch breaker bars before I got smart).  If that
doesn't work your friendly garage can get it off in seconds with air.

356 Porsches and Formula B cars are raced everywhere there is vintage
racing, although I haven't seen that combination.  It's not a 4 cam engine,
is it?  I was recently at the Brian Redman vintage event at Road America and
there were at least a dozen 356's.

If you're interested in racing a 356, even a car with it's engine, you need
to get in touch with Vic Skirmantz, in Warren MI.  He actively races one of
the quickest, and has parts you will have to have.  Also, his wife, Barbara
runs the 356 Registry, an organization I recommend you join.  They even have
a list like this.  You can find all info you need at www.356registry.org.
