Depends on how "new" a modern car is.  My 96 XJ 4.0 has the crank timing 
sensor in a tin can with a plastic view port on the top lid positioned 
on the front right side of the engine.  It fills up with water nicely as 
do 4 or 5 other electrical connectors and relays in the engine bay :(
