Read a Good Plug Lately?

I'm trying to judge my air/fuel mixture by reading the spark plug.   The 
electrode and tip look properly brown, but there is soot along the end of  the 
threaded portion.  Is this an indication of an over-rich mixture, or is  the 
soot 
building up during idling?  What's the right balance?
