And that is because modern rice burners (as well as American iron and the
Europeans) are already tweeked from the factory. They have to be to
compete in the market place. There are few cheap, impressive improvements
that can be done. Most of the mods done to these cars consist of loud
exhaust, lowered suspensions and some modest engine control reprogramming
which yields modest improvements. Beyond that you are talking nitrous.

Minor tweeking on a TR makes some significant gains and not too much money.
But you loose points in concours. The types of tweeks one would do to a
TR are alredy done at the factory on a modern car. This is the result of
several factors one of which is the advent of computerized machining
centers that produce parts with much greater accuracy and repeatability at
a reasonable cost. What used to be a long, hand operation by a skilled
machinist is now done on a programmed CNC center in 1/5 the time and
supervised by a journeyman machinist who is watching several stations.
That's progress.

But, comparing apples to apples, compare a TR to a comtemporary Honda.
(remember the Honda 600 coupe?)
