You've certainly given me a lot of ideas - some of which I'll try this 
weekend.  I REALLY appreciate the response.  Believe me - there is "stuck" 
and there is "STUCK", and mine are the latter variety.  Could be that even 
if I get the pistons out, the cylinders will be too pitted to use.

Just to give you a sense of my luck, I just came from the garage where I was 
trying to remove the hub from a half axle with a 12 ton press.  The top beam 
of the press buckled (.25" deflection so far), and the hub stayed put.  
(Obviously this is an equipment design problem - the bottle jack shouldn't 
be able to tear the press apart.)  I am keeping the pressure on - even as I 
type - hoping that something will go "bump" in the night.

PS:  Glad I have a spare axle if this half shaft goes south on me.
