Hi Chip:

Back when I got the car, I had no $$ at all for fancy stuff. I just painted
it a nice dull black to cover the dents and rust in the engine bay and left
it at that. I couldn't afford any fancy K&Ns filters like I have now, so I
bought some cheap chrome filters from Canadian Tire and cut up the old air
filter box to make the bases.

But you are right, the real thing to do is to very very carefully cover the
exterior paint and strip the engine bay to repaint with topcoat colour. I
guess I will have to dolly out the ripples on the left wheel arch as it is
not perfect. This is going to be hell down behind the headlamp recesses etc.

I am going to have to hunt up my bizarro paint formula and get some spray
cans made up for use in the close quarters in there.

Here we go again, doing the job bassackwards... ;^)

Mark,

Well, the correct "layout" for the engine bay is body color so any deviation

from that scheme is not "period correct". Your decision; however, falls
into
that great bucket of personal choice options i.e., whatever makes you happy.

Typically, the black engine bay schemes that I've seen have all been on cars

which were re-sprayed with engine in place or on cars where the hope was to
hide old or tatty paint caused by leaking batteries, leaking master
cylinders, etc.

Valve cover selection is another personal choice issue but there is an
element of functionality that you may want to consider. The aluminum covers

are thicker walled and hence provide more sound insulation from the valve
train. This is especially helpful if you're running with larger valve
clearances from using non-standard camshafts. The fins do allow more heat
transfer so there is some benefit to them other than looking "cool". I have

an aluminum cover on my Spitfire....a P.O. installed it. It does make the
engine compartment look racier eventhough the Spit doesn't go any faster
with
it!
