Many thanks to all who responded.  The most popular idea seems to be an 
imbalanced or out-of-phase driveshaft.  I would've thought I'd feel 
either of those through the shifter stick, but one lister says that 
ain't necessarily so.  I did have the thing balanced but who knows, 
maybe the guy was incompetent?  I checked the phase myself but I'll 
double check ASAP.

Anyway I've got plenty of things to look at now and will let the list 
know what's wrong, as soon as I figure it out myself!

BTW this is a swing-spring car, not Rotoflex.  Would it be important to 
phase-match the two halfshaft U-joints, on either side of the differential?
