Hey Dave,
I recently caulked my TR3 transmission hump with a 3M product that I
bought at a local paint store that speacializes in 3M products. It is called
3M Strip-Caulk, part no. 051135-08578 (black). It comes in a flat box with
60 one foot lengths of the stuff.
It is good stuff. Doesn't harden. Mushes (is that a real word?) easily
and seems to grip well. Not very expensive. You can push it into cracks with
your fingers if you want.
I still have a box with 28 feet in it sitting on my shelf so if you
can't find it locally let me know and we can work something out.

Because I wanted an easier way to check the gearbox oil level on my TR3A, I
replaced the original metal gearbox cover with a 2 piece fibreglass unit.
The replacement fits OK (not great), but it lets an awful lot of heat into
the passenger compartment. After one long drive I put a a thermometer in a
bottle of water that had been laying on the floor. It read 135 degrees.
The gearbox cover is covered by insulation (like the kind used to wrap water
heaters) and carpet.
The metal gearbox cover had a tar-like caulking on most of the sealing
surfaces. Perhaps that is instrumental in keeping the heat out? What was
that substance? Nothing obvious has leapt out at me at the local auto parts
store.
