Dave -

I think you'll find representatives of all three camps here!

Both my dad's old Volvo wagon and my Spitfire have had Laycock de
Normanville overdrive units; my dad taught me to use the clutch when
shifting into and out of overdrive, to help reduce strain on the OD
internal parts and on the drive train. The Volvo was still pulling
strong with 180,000 one-owner miles when a minivan did it in ... the
Spitfire trans. was more troublesome, but after disassembling both a
J-type and an A-type (D-type is very similar AFAIK), I believe my dad
was right in recommending that OD be used just like a 5th gear - use
the clutch.

Overall, they're durable units that will last next to forever if the
trans. oil is kept topped up and changed regularly - but given how
expensive OD parts are and how much I'd rather drive a Triumph than
fix its broken trans., I opt for more gentle OD use.

HTH,
Dan
