Ed,

Thre are probably many factors... but I find that the gap of the points is 
critical for a good smooth idle.  The points with a plastic shoe tend to wear 
quickly. As the gap closes up a little the engine may be strong and smooth at 
normal higher RPMs but will stumble and eventually stall if the point gap has 
gotten just a little smaller.

I readjust this setting once in the spring and then again in late summer.  
Points use to last for 10,00 miles back in the 60s... from my memory.
