Hi Bob:

I had a gas smell too-under the cover last winter, and so I tried the
following which solved the problem:
1) tighten the hose between the gas tank and the filler neck
2)replace the gasket that is suppose to 'seal' the gas tank sendinging unit-
use new screws and some RTV sealant. Use a small angle screwdriver, Be
patient.

This year I moved the TR into its new home 'garage and workshop', and again
noted the smell of fuel vapors at the trunk area. With careful evaluation I
traced the source to be 'under the cover' as opposed to being 'in the
trunk'. Eventually found the design of the sealing lid of the 'replacement
gas filler' was not exactly the same 'upside down saucer lid' as the
original, which I had replaced caused it was 'pitted'. The solution was to
add 2 plys of plastic (a small zip lock bag) under the cap., to 'improve
the sealing'- No more problems!

Amazing what you discover when you really get 'TR Technical'
