  Bob,

   It doesn't take much gas to stink up the place. If you've made sure the 
source of the smell is not coming from under the hood (sticking float jet, 
etc,), I might suggest looking at your vent tube (located on the right front 
of your fuel tank) the gasket where the sending unit for you fuel gauge is 
located (center rear of the tank). You might also check the condition of the 
filler hose which connects the filler cap to the tank. If any of these is 
leaking you will notice fresh stains in the dust around the openings. If all 
are okay you might have a pinhole leak in the tank. The fix is to seal the 
tank with a sealing solution (available from Eastwood Co. or a good 
motorcycle shop - follow the directions scrupulously). Or, take the tank to 
a specialist for professional sealing. BTDT....
